AMRF was founded in 1988 to collect, repair, and test medical equipment donated by U.S. hospitals, clinics, and manufacturers. AMRF ships:

- Over three hundred hospitals and manufacturers have donated used or surplus equipment to AMRF.
- To date, these contributions total over $200 million (if valued at today's prices).
- AMRF provides training in equipment repair and maintenance; assistance in location of parts and supplies, and medical equipment consulting services to hospitals worldwide.
- AMRF has donated programs of medical equipment to more than 190 health care facilities in 90 countries.
- AMRF has a large volunteer base of biomedical engineers and other caring individuals who donate over twenty thousand hours per year to inventory, test, repair and ship donated medical equipment.
